Here a very late report from the trip to Vienna...

The conference

Well, most of the time I spent at the ICTM conference, as I was supposed to, of course, with funding for my participation there and all. As for the official program, the conference wasn't really that interesting for me, or maybe I just chose the wrong sessions to listen to. There were some interesting papers though, and I got good questions and comments for mine, which is always nice (and quite rare actually).

One of the things I looked forward to was hearing Gerhard Kubik, a fairly well known researcher of African music who has written a few articles I find myself constantly referring to. He is a very fluent and interesting speaker as such, but in his two presentations (one of which was the only real plenary speech at the conference) he seemed to have problems getting to the point - if he ever had one. So that was also a slight disappointment.

But of course the most important thing at these events is the social stuff, which was good as it usually is at ICTM events, although I was too tired to stay out late in the evenings. In any case, I met several people I know from my year in Berlin - most of them I had not seen since 1998 - and some other acquaintances from previous conferences, and of course got to know a few new people as well.

As conferences usually do, this one also gave me a bit of a boost with my dissertation, in my head at least, due to all the other stuff going on I haven't had much time to actually do something about it. And it feels almost sad that I probably won't be doing much until next year, maybe, although on the other hand I'm looking forward to getting some time off of my research and especially all the University stuff.

The city

The city of Vienna was prettier (and less expensive) than what I remembered from about ten years ago. Back then we were in the city some time in March or April I think and it was horribly cold. And all the old white buildings made everything seem even colder. But in the summer the city is a lot friendlier, with many big parks (with lots of benches to sit on!) and lots of pedestrian streets. Things seemed great for cyclists as well - can't help but wonder why in Helsinki all streets need to be primarily for cars...

Luckily the weather was very sunny and warm on Sunday, the day without official program, most of the time it was horribly windy and quite cool. So anyway I spent the Sunday walking around in the city, got my feet very swollen and my face burnt in the sunshine. Maybe luckily in Austria all shops are closed on Sundays, so I could not go shopping... With all the tourists in Vienna one would imagine that there would be something open, but no. Even on weekdays supermarkets close before seven. Strange.

Oh, and this thing with all the famous composers was a bit funny at times. On the biggest pedestrian street they actually have stars with the signatures of composers and musicians who have once lived in Vienna, like the Hollywood walk of fame or whatever it is called. That was a bit too much for me, the statues I can still take...

All in all it was nice to get some time away from the usual stuff here in Helsinki and fortunately the conference wasn't any later, I think only a week or two later the trip would have already been too exhausting for me. Lately walking to and from the bus stop to go to the University has been enough exercise for me.

Somewhere in between

Kotona alkaa olla vähän ahdasta. Eikä pelkästään siksi, että tuli hankittua pinnasänky... mutta kaipa siellä jotenkin mahdutaan olemaan, ehkä sitten joskus vuoden päästä voi alkaa tosissaan katselemaan isompaa asuntoa jostain. Noin muuten kaikki alkaa vähitellen olla järjestyksessä, Thiekoun matkatavaratkin saatu perille.

Tosin äitiyspäivärahoissa sun muissa saattaa vielä kestää, KELA kun oli jotenkin onnistunut merkitsemään omiin systeemeihinsä, että en muka kuulu Suomen sosiaaliturvan piiriin (ulkomailla asumisen takia), minkä johdosta sain sieltä vielä yhden lomakkeen täytettäväksi. Omasta mielestäni ilmoitin kyllä siitä pitemmästä Senegalin reissusta Väestörekisteriin, että kyse on väliaikaisesta oleskelusta ulkomailla, mutta jostain syystä KELA on sitä mieltä, että olen edelleen ulkomailla. Vastahan siitä on reilu vuosi kun tulin takaisin... Lomakkeen täyttäminen oli aika mielenkiintoista, kun se oli selvästi tarkoitettu Suomeen muuttaville ulkomaalaisille, mutta toivottavasti selitykset kelpaa, ja nuo äitiyspäivärahat sun muut saadaan vihdoin päätettyä. Tällä viikollahan mun piti jo olla äitiyslomalla.

No, käytännössä joka tapauksessa pitää kirjoittaa yhtä artikkelia. Ja toinen on varmaankin tulossa arvioijilta takaisin elokuun puolella, sitten sitäkin pitää muokata. Ja sitten olisi vielä kolmas englanniksi, mutta paras etten edes ajattele sitä vielä. Viime viikolla ei pahemmin työasiat edistyneet, niin kuin etukäteen arvelinkin, kun piti kysellä sen matkalaukun perään ja katsella kaupunkia ja mitä kaikkea. Viikonloppuna käytiin vielä vanhempien luona saunomassa, joten melkein kaikki pakolliset Suomi-kuviot on kohta suoritettu. Jos sattuisi hyvä sää, niin voisi lähteä mökille ensi viikonloppuna.

Synttäreiden vietto taitaa jäädä tänä vuonna vähän väliin, kun ei oikein jaksa järjestää mitään eikä pahemmin ole varaakaan.

Ai niin, lapsi vaikutti kääntyneen oikein päin, tosin neuvolan täti ei ollut ihan varma asiasta, koska lapsi liikkui niin vilkkaasti. On kuulemma vielä tilaa liikkua... No, maha kyllä onkin tosi iso. Tai siis mittausten mukaan aika tarkkaan keskikokoinen. Kaikki muukin normaalia, jopa hemoglobiini oli vähän noussut edelliskerrasta.

I noticed I haven't written anything in English for ages, so here are at least a few updates... First of all, I just came back today from the ICTM conference in Vienna, the photos are already in Flickr, but I still need to organize them. I might tell more about that trip later, or maybe add some explanations to the photos, or something, let's see if I ever get to it.

As if I didn't already have enough places to play around at on the internet, you can now find me also in LinkedIn and Facebook. The first one is supposed to be about professional contacts but I really doubt if it can ever be useful in any way. And I don't know about Facebook yet, I quess is just another site where can you post stuff and make links to your friends just for the fun of it. Anyway, you can search for me there if you like such sites...

And finally one more update before going to bed: I won't be able to read my usual e-mail address for the whole weekend due to some program update at the University, so if you feel an urgent need to contact me, use the comment box here or my hotmail-address (if you happen to know what it is), or send me an SMS or whatever.

Flying away

Esitelmä on valmis ja matkalaukku pakattu. Kohta siis suunnistan lentokentälle ja sieltä Wieniin. Passi melkein unohtui kaivaa esiin, mutta nyt on sekin käsilaukussa. Mietin, olisikohan pelkkä henkkari kelvannut, kun kerran EU:n sisällä matkustan, mutta ehkäpä en kokeile tällä kertaa.

Ihan kiva päästä vähän muihin maisemiin ja erityisesti paria Berliinin kaveria tapaamaan, vaikka nyt sitten tulikin vihdoin kesä tänne Suomeen. Kävin kyllä sen kunniaksi taas eilen uimassa stadikalla. Ja kun pitää jotain liikuntaa harrastaa, eikä oikein mitään muuta jaksa jättimahan kanssa. Uiminen on vieläpä halpaa hupia, koska jostain käsittämättömästä syystä uimastadikalla (muttei missään muualla) myös jatko-opiskelijat on opiskelijoita, kunhan löytyy lukuvuositarra opiskelijakortista.

Neuvolassakin kävin eilen, hemoglobiini laskenut rautatableteista huolimatta ja verenpaineet hyppelee miten sattuu (no matalalla on edelleen, joten sillä ei niin väliä). Lapsi oli tällä kertaa väärin päin eli pää ylöspäin, minkä johdosta päästäänkin jo parin viikon päästä uudestaan neuvolaan. Toivottavasti matkailu avartaa sen verran, että lapsi ymmärtää taas kääntyä pää alaspäin ennen sitä.

Kela ei ole vieläkään vaivautunut tekemään päätöstä äitiyslomasta (ja varsinkin -päivärahoista, lomahan on aina kovin suhteellinen käsite), olisi musta jo ihan ajankohtaista, kun tarkoitus oli aloittaa se 21.7. Hakemuksenkin lähetin jo toukokuun alussa! Eipä kyllä ole paljon parempaa sanottavaa muidenkaan maiden valtion virkailijoista...

Mutta pitänee pakata tietokonekin reppuun ja lähteä bussille. Ensi viikon torstaina takaisin.
