Facebook

If there's anyone hoping for updates in English, you better look for me on Facebook, I'll be more likely to keep it up to date than this blog. And anyway my blog updates and my newest photos on Flickr show up there as well.

Before the Music Dies

I guess they haven't shown this in Finland or maybe I'm just so very out of everything nowadays... Well, luckily some people keep others informed. So just as a reminder to myself to check this film out some time in the future. And to anyone else who might be interested, of course.

Wien

Here a very late report from the trip to Vienna...

The conference

Well, most of the time I spent at the ICTM conference, as I was supposed to, of course, with funding for my participation there and all. As for the official program, the conference wasn't really that interesting for me, or maybe I just chose the wrong sessions to listen to. There were some interesting papers though, and I got good questions and comments for mine, which is always nice (and quite rare actually).

One of the things I looked forward to was hearing Gerhard Kubik, a fairly well known researcher of African music who has written a few articles I find myself constantly referring to. He is a very fluent and interesting speaker as such, but in his two presentations (one of which was the only real plenary speech at the conference) he seemed to have problems getting to the point - if he ever had one. So that was also a slight disappointment.

But of course the most important thing at these events is the social stuff, which was good as it usually is at ICTM events, although I was too tired to stay out late in the evenings. In any case, I met several people I know from my year in Berlin - most of them I had not seen since 1998 - and some other acquaintances from previous conferences, and of course got to know a few new people as well.

As conferences usually do, this one also gave me a bit of a boost with my dissertation, in my head at least, due to all the other stuff going on I haven't had much time to actually do something about it. And it feels almost sad that I probably won't be doing much until next year, maybe, although on the other hand I'm looking forward to getting some time off of my research and especially all the University stuff.

The city

The city of Vienna was prettier (and less expensive) than what I remembered from about ten years ago. Back then we were in the city some time in March or April I think and it was horribly cold. And all the old white buildings made everything seem even colder. But in the summer the city is a lot friendlier, with many big parks (with lots of benches to sit on!) and lots of pedestrian streets. Things seemed great for cyclists as well - can't help but wonder why in Helsinki all streets need to be primarily for cars...

Luckily the weather was very sunny and warm on Sunday, the day without official program, most of the time it was horribly windy and quite cool. So anyway I spent the Sunday walking around in the city, got my feet very swollen and my face burnt in the sunshine. Maybe luckily in Austria all shops are closed on Sundays, so I could not go shopping... With all the tourists in Vienna one would imagine that there would be something open, but no. Even on weekdays supermarkets close before seven. Strange.

Wien 40Oh, and this thing with all the famous composers was a bit funny at times. On the biggest pedestrian street they actually have stars with the signatures of composers and musicians who have once lived in Vienna, like the Hollywood walk of fame or whatever it is called. That was a bit too much for me, the statues I can still take...

All in all it was nice to get some time away from the usual stuff here in Helsinki and fortunately the conference wasn't any later, I think only a week or two later the trip would have already been too exhausting for me. Lately walking to and from the bus stop to go to the University has been enough exercise for me.

News in English

Wien 18

I noticed I haven't written anything in English for ages, so here are at least a few updates... First of all, I just came back today from the ICTM conference in Vienna, the photos are already in Flickr, but I still need to organize them. I might tell more about that trip later, or maybe add some explanations to the photos, or something, let's see if I ever get to it.

As if I didn't already have enough places to play around at on the internet, you can now find me also in LinkedIn and Facebook. The first one is supposed to be about professional contacts but I really doubt if it can ever be useful in any way. And I don't know about Facebook yet, I quess is just another site where can you post stuff and make links to your friends just for the fun of it. Anyway, you can search for me there if you like such sites...

And finally one more update before going to bed: I won't be able to read my usual e-mail address for the whole weekend due to some program update at the University, so if you feel an urgent need to contact me, use the comment box here or my hotmail-address (if you happen to know what it is), or send me an SMS or whatever.

Looking back

Sorry to keep you waiting... in case someone was actually waiting for my news. Well, anyway, here's something about the four weeks in Dakar...

lampaat6Dakar was crazier than ever, firstly because of two of the main roads leading into the city being improved (which is nice and all, but do you really have to do the two at the same time?) and because of Tabaski falling on the 31st December. Tabaski being the biggest Muslim holiday of the year, meaning that everything cost more than usual and all roadsides were filled with sheep.

OlohuoneSo for the two first weeks we spent hours and hours in buses, car rapides and taxis... and paid way too much for the taxis, of course. And we didn't always get to our dance lessons on time, but neither did our teachers... In any case we did dance quite a lot, besides the dance lessons in several clubs at night. We even ended up on Senegalese tv, just because we happened to go to see Youssou Ndour in Thiossane on New Year's Eve and ended up standing right in front of the stage, which maybe wasn't such a bad place to be, when the place was so full (despite the tripled prize of the tickets). Well, in Thiossane you could really dance, although these girls next to us kept trying. But on Christmas Eve we did dance in the (very hot) Kily, Thione Seck was playing there as usual, and on other nights to Ceddo and Fallou Dieng in Alizé. And to Mbaye Dieye Faye in the new Papayer, which really wasn't my kind of a place, rather something for skinny young people with too much money. And there are such people in Dakar, more than one would imagine.

Goreen kissatSo, besides dancing and lying on the floor in our huge (and very empty) living room, we did see some sights and even went to the beach on Ngor island once, although it was a bit too cold for that already. But Gorée was beautiful, and there were lots of well fed cats - not like the poor one who came in to our house several times, looking for food I suppose. I had not been on Gorée since 2000, but as I remembered, it really is a different world compared to Dakar, calm and colourful. Even the souvenir sellers are a lot less aggressive than in town. And there are no cars!

lehmä2Well, after all the holidays the city was a lot more bearable, except that we had some trouble finding places to eat as most of the less expensive restaurants were closed for the week following Tabaski. Lots of shops at the markets were closed, too, but we managed to spend a lot of money shopping anyway. Obviously all the sheep were gone, and the streets seemed consequently a bit empty.

I didn't do much for my research, except going to some sabar parties. And the dance and drum lessons, of course. But I didn't film anything and didn't do the interviews I had planned, so I quess this was more vacation than work, which was the plan, anyway.

Paluu

Olen taas kotona Alppilassa ja mahdollisesti jo lähiaikoina ehdin kirjoittaa jotain tännekin. Matkakuvia siirtyy kovaa vauhtia Flickriin, linkit oikeassa reunassa.

I'm back in Helsinki, but you'll still have to wait a bit for any news from Senegal. Some photos have already been loaded to Flickr (click the links on the right).

24.12.06

And we wish you a merry Christmas...

Here in Dakar it's a bit hot today, doesn't feel much like Christmas, but as I've heard there isn't any snow in Finland either. Here there's some sunshine at least. Dakar hasn't changed much in the five months or so that I was away, except that the traffic jams are worse than ever.

The first week here has gone by fast, we've been dancing almost every day, with Pape Moussa from the National Ballet and a girl called Rama. We've been to see Ceddo, once again, and one sabar party. We wanted to see Youssou Ndour yesterday, but heard that he's not playing in Thiossane, because there was a big concert at a stadium, but maybe next weekend. Anyway it was probably best not to go out dancing all night, because I'm having a slight flu, most likely just because of all the dust and pollution here.

If there's anything urgent, I have a number here: +221-4803778. I also check my finnish number for messages every other day or so.

HYVÄÄ JOULUA!

Big yellow taxi

Well, I'm off to Senegal, once again, in about nine hours. I'm actually trying not to work much this time, so I'm not taking my computer with me, which means that you'll have to wait for photos etc. until I'm back. But maybe I'll write something, I most probably won't be able to keep myself away from internet for four weeks... and I don't think I'll even try. Not working might also be hard, because we'll be taking dance lessons with a friend that's going to Dakar with me, maybe drum lessons, too. It's a bit hard to keep lessons for fun and for work apart... And I'm kind of thinking about doing a few interviews as well.

As some kind of a result of reading (and a few discussions) I've decided to replace my number one guru, the good old Alan P. Merriam with John Blacking, for the simple reason that doing research on "culture in music" as well as "music in culture" seems more interesting than just the latter. As for "music as culture", it doesn't say very much about what research should (or could) be about. But I really better go to bed and get some sleep - before that big yellow taxi is coming to pick me up - and leave the rest of any theoretical ramblings for January.

Koululaisen optiot

I got the graduate school position I applied for some time ago - but for the year 2008, with possible prolongation for 2009. What I'll be doing most of next year is still a mystery.

4.11.06

Running up that hill

Well, I've finally finished most of the things that I mentioned a month ago, maybe that explains why I haven't been posting that much here. A couple of days ago I noticed that I had not really met anyone for over a week, that's a bit weird. I think we used to go for coffee or something with friends at the university or after dance lessons more often than this before. So there isn't much to tell, I've mostly just been sitting somewhere at a computer trying to write something.

The article turned out to be more or less about defining the concept of knowledge in my research, quite unexpectedly actually, I though I was writing about cross-cultural communication in learning dance or something similar. Maybe it partly still is, kind of. I just hope the article pleases the editor, she's more of an expert on that kind of philosophical questions than I am.

If I wouldn't be so busy with all the important stuff and consequently so tired, I might feel bad about some people who seem to think that they know everything about what I do and say, when they don't really know anything about me. For the moment, I don't really care, I just wonder what kind of an imaginary world those people live in.

4.10.06

Vision quest

Lately I've been desperately trying to find some ideas for an article (yes, still the same one), about four conference papers and two applications for funding. I just don't have much to say about my research at the moment I quess, or I'm just so out of the academic circles after spending a such long time in Senegal that I don't really know what I should be writing about. Somebody should create a database, where you could find out what are the themes and concepts one should mention in these kinds of writings. Also a database of clever titles for conference presentations would be nice.

I already gave up on one of the conferences and did one proposal together with a collegue - a lecture-demonstration for a dance conference, a bit scary, the majority of people at those things are (or have been) professional dancers and I'm definitely not. For another big world conference I'll probably just make a proposal to present my thing as "new research" because I can't think of anything worth talking about relating to the themes of the conference. And there are four of them, so the problem is more likely my poor imagination than the themes themselves. As for the rest, there will be two presentations to make in November, smaller events, and in Finnish, but still.

As for the applications, I can't think of anything (related to research) more frustrating than writing those. I'm almost finished with the one for a graduate school position, which would be good, getting payed a salary instead of a grant and all, but then again there seems to be a lot of pressure for the people there to be "productive". I think I know how to create enough pressure for myself, don't need anything extra, thank you. But as this research project of ours will be finished for my part in April, I'll need to find something else.

I just couldn't feel more stupid than when updating my research plan, it sounds so boring and anything else but innovative and whatever else research should be. It seems that those plans aren't really about presenting your research as it is or will be, anyway, but more about showing that you know what is in at the moment - that's what I could use that database for, to find few more fashionable words to make mine look more interesting. And I mean sure all this corporeality and that sort of stuff (which seems to be the thing for that graduate school at least) actually is relevant for my research but still, in the end it is about Senegalese music and dance, practically a more or less basic music/dance ethnography, so I wouldn't want to make it look like something else. Although I probably should.

Well, today I went to listen to a seminar (same and a bit more in Finnish) at the Theatre Academy. I quess I expected more of the seminar, and in any case most of those people were talking about dance teaching, so I didn't get that much out of it. But seminars and conferences always have a strange effect on me: Although I'm never really able to concentrate on the presentations (even if they're good), for whatever reason I can very well concentrate on other things while listening to them. Sadly, I didn't get any new ideas for my own reseach while trying to listen to the presentations, as I sometimes do - completely independent of what the person in front may be talking about - but in the pause I started reading a book I've been carrying around for some weeks...

Boulevard de l'IndependanceTo finish off with something nice: There probably isn't anything better at the moment than this cd, kind of a mixture of all the best stuff in West African music. (Although the sabar parts are a bit boring, but never mind, the rest is just great.) Got the cd on Monday and today I (finally) bought a ticket for Toumani Diabaté's concert here on November 3rd, I've been meaning to for about a month or so. That's something to look forward to... and I'll have a chance to wear one of my Senegalese dresses, it's just so hard to decide which one...

18.9.06

More music

I finally became a Last.fm user last week and have spent too much time trying it out since. I would have signed upmuch earlier, like a year ago or something (I really try to be hip and cool and up-to-date... sometimes), but as I basically never listened to any music on my computer back then, it didn't make much sense. But now that we have such a nice new computer in our office and have been loading quite an amount of mp3's into it, I just had to. So if you feel the need to know what music I have been listening to, you can find out here. Well, at home I mostly listen to things on my stereo, so there's usually quite a lot of stuff missing.

24.8.06

At my most beautiful

Lately I've been writing too much about all kinds of computer & internet related stuff, like rearraging this blog and trying to get my dear old computer working again. But I guess there isn't that much to tell, besides work I don't do that much, except the usual dance lessons, and yoga sometimes. (Well, I did go to see one of my favourite bands and a couple of others on Sunday.)

And, for a person who enjoys complaining, I'm probably too happy to think of things to write about.

Well, I could (or should?) complain about being so far away from someone who feels very close. That really is hard sometimes. Especially on days like the few last ones, and many others, when there doesn't seem to be decent computers and fast enough* internet connections to be found anywhere in Senegal. But still, at least there is someone there. For the moment that seems like a lot.

Another someone advised me to make a decision and decide not to regret it. So I did and I haven't, yet, although this certainly isn't a decision a sensible person would make. But when have I ever made any sensible decisions, at least when it somes to the important things in life?

*Fast enough for video calls, if someone happened to be wondering.

13.8.06

Somebody leave the light on

It's been a bit hard getting back to work with Astou staying here at my place and all the dance workshops etc. Anyway, I've been sitting at the office and hoping to find some ideas for this article that I should be writing. (Office seems so official... this past week it has been more like a place to escape from the rest of the world.) I haven't been getting much further with the article, but besides dancing I've also been reading and thinking about dancing a lot, so maybe I'll eventually come up with something worth writing about.

It has been a bit strange dancing in studios with mirrors after such a long time. But for some reason I haven't been much looking at myself in the mirror at the dance lessons. I don't know if I just somehow forget that they are there or if I'm scared that I might not like what I see. And just a few days ago I was reading an article where the author was claiming that mirrors shouldn't really be used in dance teaching, because then people concentrate only on the visual image and not on how the movements feel. In a way that's probably true, but then again it seems important to get that visual feedback, too, sometimes at least. A bit too often, at some sabar parties I went to in Dakar, I thought I had danced quite well there (and people were even telling me so) but then I saw the video and wasn't that convinced anymore.

A&E3But I suppose I've learned something since last November. A couple of weeks ago I saw a video of one of my dance lessons in Dakar in January at a friend's house and that watching that one was a bit disturbing, but then again, comparing that one to a dance lesson I filmed in May, I felt like I have achieved something. I'm not trying to become a professional dancer or anything, but it's nice to see some progress after so many hours of practising and feeling like not really learning anything. And if it's true that dance is a kind of "cultural knowledge" like they say, I might even - some day - be able to translate some of that knowledge into some kind of "academic knowledge" which I'll need for writing my dissertation...

- - Yes, I know this isn't really what you all want to read about, but you'll just have to wait for the other stuff. For the moment I'm not quite sure what I should and shouldn't write here as more and more people I know seem to be reading this blog. - -

Oh, almost forgot... I also wanted to tell another kind of funny thing I've noticed lately: I really enjoy listening to Finnish pop/rock. It's not that I usually don't, I was just thinking about when I came back from my first trip to Senegal (I spent 3 months there that time) in April 2000. Back then I couldn't stand to listen to practically any kind of Western pop music for a long time. It just sounded too boring (rhythmically probably). So maybe Finnish bands are getting better, or maybe this just tells something about my state of mind at the moment.

30.7.06

Getting updated

An old friend called me from Japan yesterday. I hadn't heard from him for at least a year. I was hoping to see him in Dakar but I didn't, so I was of course glad to hear from him. The call reminded me that I haven't written any posts in English since I went to Senegal, I suppose I needed to write in Finnish being so far away from Finland... He had also visited my homepage, where the links need to be updated, I try to get to that some time soon. There are also about a hundred other things to do, most importantly all the e-mails I should write and the phone calls I should make, the list just keeps getting longer. So if you don't hear from me, it doesn't mean I've forgotten you, it's just that I'm a bit busy with all the dancing and all kinds of "coming back home" stuff. I'll move back to my own appartment next week and I suppose life will be getting somewhat more back to normal after that.

11.12.05

Getting there

This one in English, because I hate to write Finnish without the ä's & ö's... First of all, I already have the phone I was supposed to get on the 15th, just in case someone wants to call me. I won't be keeping my Finnish phone with me anymore, so if you send messages I might not answer right away. I have moved to the appartment, although it's still not quite ready, but at least today there has been running water.

Yesterday there was this huge party, a name giving ceremony of the first child (son) of a friend, it went on for the whole day, I have some photos & video, I'll try posting the photos to Flickr some time soon. Besides that I've spent most of my time with trying to organize things and meet some people. I'll start drum lessons on Monday and dance lessons hopefully some time next week, too. And I really need to start learning wolof.

Mostly I'm feeling kind of frustrated, because (as expected) getting things done here is a bit complicated sometimes, but then there are these moments when I'm really happy to be here. Like on Tuesday I went to see the band Ceddo practice in the back room of a gas station - it's quite terrible really, such a good band and they play every week at this club and still they practice in this small room and have instruments that are probably dangerous...

I'm running out of time here, so more some other day. Friends please, send me some e-mail!
